Turkey hosts the most number of refugees in the world. The majority of these are Syrian and Afghan.

The responsibility of hosting such large numbers of refugees is immense and the infrastructure that is required to provide for long-term needs is costly.

The biggest challenges include social cohesion and cultural integration within Turkish society. There are language, communication and cultural barriers as well as financial insecurity and political vulnerability.

Unique challenges faced by
Syrian Refugees in Turkey

  • Language barrier
  • Cultural barrier
  • Lack of clarity over legal status
  • Need for long-term solutions
  • Unemployment and poverty
  • Poor living conditions and quality of life
  • Psychological repercussions of expulsion from home
  • Psychological repercussions of social tensions in host communities
