Devastating Floods Hit Sudan
This disaster has only added to the severe humanitarian crisis in the region. Sudan has been severely impacted by heavy rains and flooding since June 2024, affecting an estimated 317,000 people across 60 localities in 16 states. The devastation has led to the displacement of 118,000 individuals and the destruction of nearly 27,000 homes. On August 25, the Arba’at Dam in Red Sea State was breached, causing extensive damage to villages downstream and draining the dam’s reservoir.
The floodwaters have not only damaged homes and infrastructure but have also ravaged agricultural lands, threatening livelihoods. Public health is now a critical concern, with waterborne diseases and respiratory illnesses particularly endangering vulnerable populations, including children and the elderly.
