Education for children in Gaza
Education for children in Gaza
IDRF is continuing to provide children and youth with the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of structured educational programming at the Child Center in Gaza.
The Situation
Education is identified as the fourth global priority in order to create sustainable development for all. In Gaza, access to quality education in a safe, child-friendly environment is challenged by economic, political and social barriers.
According to both the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) and the final results of the Population, Housing and Establishments Census 2017, children (under 18) in the Gaza Strip make up approximately half of the population (48%). Three vicious attacks in 2008-2009, 2012 and 2014 caused severe damage to houses, schools, libraries and kindergartens.
Children continue to be physically and psychologically affected. Adding to this volatile and insecure context are exceptionally high levels of poverty across the Gaza Strip. According to the PCBS, 53% of families in Gaza in 2017 suffer from poverty while 34% suffer from extreme poverty adversely affecting access to education and cultural and recreational activities.
