Cancer treatment for children in Pakistan

Cancer treatment for children in Pakistan

An estimated 8000 children are diagnosed with cancer every year in Pakistan. Through Indus Hospital, IDRF is providing quality, free cancer treatment to children under 18.

The Situation

An estimated 8000 children are diagnosed with cancer every year in Pakistan (Punjab Cancer Registry). Low cure rates of childhood cancer are due to late diagnosis and high rates of abandonment.

There have been a rising trend of referrals to our center; 1026 referrals in 2019 compared to 573 referrals in 2014. Challenges that have given rise to high death rates in child cancer patients:

  • Lack of cancer awareness

  • Lack of cancer expertise

  • Lack of enough cancer treatment centers

  • Inability of patients and their families to afford cancer treatment
